1st Annual Hay Fund Challenge

As a supporter and Friend of Refuge Farms I am pleased to announce the 1st Annual Hay Fund Challenge. I will Match the first $2500 raised for the Hay Fund. One large winter hay bale, without transportaion, costs THE FARM $35. Locating and transporting 240 large round grassy bales of hay each winter for our Herd of sixteen is the single most costly expense we incur. The 2006-07 winter found us scrambling for hay and funding resourses as the weather cut down on how much hay was produced and the cost of fuel skyrocketed. This year we are faced with feeding hay all summer because the pasture is severely depleted because of the drought conditions of last year. Some of our hay resourses may be planting in corn and again transportaion costs have continued to rise. Refuge Farms is currently committed to and needs all 510 round bales of hay to feed The Herd from April 2007 thru the Winter of 2008. The total amount required to purchase and transport this amount of hay is $15,400. We will continue to have other fund raisers for hay, but as you can see we will require almost twice as much monies to cover the additional hay.
